Lagos State first ladies commissions Afro - Brazilian Cultural Centre, Lagos Island

It was a delightful point of view as the commissioning of the Afro - Brazilian Cultural Centre was acknowledged by senior citizens of Popo Aguda as the centre brings childhood memories of the Afro Brazilian quarters' past to the present.

Afro - Brazilian Cultural Centre is a place dedicated to the promotion of the Afro - Brazilian experience, education, history, music, cuisine, and carnival in Lagos.

Freed and former enslaved person's  began to return to West Africa in the 1830's and Popo Aguda, the Brazilian Quarters in Lagos is the biggest Afro Brazilian Community in West Africa.

The Centre intend to share and document the experiences of the returnees from South America and their contribution to the development of Lagos and West Africa.

The commissioning was an event organized by the Brazilian Descendants Association (BDA) and the partners in progress; Mr Lawon Adams (Loving Lagos), Anago Osho (Anago James Akeem Osho Adventures) and Mr Remi Dacosta (Redac Tours).

The commissioning of the Afro - Brazilian Cultural Centre was attended by the first Lady to the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwoolu, (who is also a descendant of the Afro Brazilian returnee and her maiden name is Carena), The Hon. Minister Alh. Lai Mohammed who was represented by The Director General of Nigerian Council of Art and Culture Otunba Runsewe.

The Brazilian Ambassador Francisco Luz, was in attendance with other dignitaries like The Senior Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Mr. Solomon Bonu, Lagos Island East Local Government Chairman, Hon. Kamal Bashua, Members of the BDA Board of Trustees Mr. Lawal Pedro SAN, Chairman, Mr. Tayo Bamgbose Martins, Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Ladi Vera-Cruz, Mr. Da-costa Oluremi, Brazilian Campos Carreta Carnival Association, Mr Lawon Adams, Anago Osho and many other dignitaries.

Lai Mohammed who was represented by the Director General of Nigerian Council of Art and Culture, Otunba Runsewe, followed by the First Lady to the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwoolu, (behind her is The Brazilian Ambassador Francisco Luz), the Senior Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Mr. Solomon Bonu, Anago Osho, the Ambassador for Imperial African History and Genetic Genealogical Society (DNA Tested Africa Descendants), the founder of Anago James Akeem Osho Adventures, Partner, Afro - Brazilian Cultural Centre and Mr and Mrs Lawon Adams, C.E.O of LOVING LAGOS,  and first Partner, Afro - Brazilian Cultural Centre.

It is the capital of Benin republic and is situated on the West African Coast. The word Porto Novo is a Portuguese word which means New port. The Portuguese were the first European to settle down there. Porto Novo is also known as Ajase (Ajace) by the Yorubas, and known as Hogbonu by the Ogu. Porto Novo was established in the 16th Century. It was a Slave port controlled by the Alaafin of Oyo. The Oyo Empire was a great empire which also controlled the Slave port of Badagry. It partly controlled the Slave port of Whydah (Ouidah) for a period before Whydah was completely taken over by the Dahomey Kings.
