The first International Tour Guides Day In Nigeria celebrated by WATGA-NIGERIA

The first ever International Tour Guides Day in Nigeria was celebrated in Badagry by West African Tour Guides Association Nigeria (WATGA-NIGERIA) on the 21st of February 2017, and the support by members and tourism practitioners was encouraging.
The event began with an opening prayer by Mr Ijinla at the Heritage Museum.

The introduction speech and purpose for the celebration of International Tour Guides day was presented by the President, Anago James Akeem Osho. He gave words of encouragement to the participants and the importance of tour guiding in tourism destination development.

Mr Peter Olaide-Mesewaku was excited about the celebration and the fact that the first ITGD in Nigeria was held in Badagry, Lagos. Lagos state ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism supported the event and promised to be a part of the event annually. The principal of WAPA skill acquisition program suggested and desired that his school partner with WATGA-NIGERIA so that Tour Guiding could be taught in their skill acquisition center.

Mr Hundeyin, the CEO of Soketta Hotels graced the event and donated financially and showed his continuous support for the Association.

The International Tour Guides Day was celebrated in Badagry with funfare, solidarity walk and speeches. The celebration continued at O2 Islander Marina Badagry, hosted by the Restaurant owner Mr Olaide Osoba who is also a member.

It is the capital of Benin republic and is situated on the West African Coast. The word Porto Novo is a Portuguese word which means New port. The Portuguese were the first European to settle down there. Porto Novo is also known as Ajase (Ajace) by the Yorubas, and known as Hogbonu by the Ogu. Porto Novo was established in the 16th Century. It was a Slave port controlled by the Alaafin of Oyo. The Oyo Empire was a great empire which also controlled the Slave port of Badagry. It partly controlled the Slave port of Whydah (Ouidah) for a period before Whydah was completely taken over by the Dahomey Kings.
